GIS Day

GIS Day is a global event which is held in November each year. Various organizations all over the world celebrate this day by spreading and broadening the concept of GIS through convening events involving the general public, schools, universities, businesses, government and non-government organizations. The main purpose of this day is to promote the awareness of GIS universally and to demonstrate the differences GIS makes in our society. Since 1987, the GIS day is celebrated on Wednesday/19th November by The National Geographic Society in Geography Awareness Week. The first GIS Day in Afghanistan was held on 15th November 2006 at Liwal Ltd. with the cooperation and support of Afghanistan Information Management Services (AIMS). In this event, tens of people came to introduce how they use GIS to improve their planning, decision making and work. As a first GIS day in Afghanistan, only people gathered who already had an idea of GIS. For the upcoming years, we plan to celebrate GIS day in government and non-government organizations in particular educational centers.
