Metadata
As ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) describes metadata; “Metadata describes geographic information system (GIS) resources in the same way a card in a library’s card catalog describes a book”.

Metadata is data about data. It is a descriptive text about individual spatial data sets and provides such information as projection used, data source, date and scale of source data and accuracy. A short abstract is also included providing a narrative description of its purpose and restrictions, if applicable.
